McGuinty Liberals Flick Up

It is very, very seldom that I agree with the Western Standard, and I am almost always in favor of initiatives that help people take action against Global Climate Change. However, attempts by a government led by someone as totally square as Dalton McGuinty to "appeal to the youth" are inevitably doomed to failure.

Witness the Ontario launch of the "Flick Off" campaign, and Environment Minister Laurel Broten's desperate attempt to maintain her dignity in front of its official logo. She could hardly have looked sillier if she'd appeared with a nose stud and three pounds of eye-liner a la Avril Lavigne.

Can we officially dub this one a Public Relations Disaster?

heh.

Personally, I like it.

It would be kind of cute, but spending half a million to shut off their lights seems kind of ridiculous. Perhaps next they'll have one encouraging kids to pick up after themselves.

RT,
This is about the third group doing this kind of thing, though (the other name that springs to mind is "Global Cool") how many International rock stars does it take to tell you to, for example, wash in cold water?

Not on an environmental theme, but I’m also reminded of the ritual efforts every four years to encourage young people in the U.S. to exercise their franchise through programs such as “Rock the Vote.” Another spectacular failure that never seems to have any impact whatsoever on the pathetically low turnout amongst voters under 25.

Notwithstanding the questionable taste of the program, I fail to see how this is going to do anything.

From my candid observations, young people today are vastly more aware of environmental issues than the average man on the street. Spending a half million to preach to a converted audience makes no sense to me.

For all those in a huff over the naughty word. Chill, it could be much much worse. At least it's not Dalton rapping yo yo yo, it's keen to be green.

That was my phrase to the GW herd.

Thanks a lots. Now I've got to explain to my children exactly what they're NOT seeing when they read that sign!

No class, no dignity, absolutely poor taste. Common vulgar gutter language as part of an ad campaign? What idiot approved that?!!

Actually, the sign DOES say "Flick Off", but the type is done up so as to hint at the naughty phrase.

Anon — Who knows, maybe it will start a trend to saying "Flick" instead of "Fuck" and actually clean up the "vulgar gutter language" that appears to offend your delicate sensibilites. Law of unintended consequences and all that...

Hmmm... I ain't sure. I live a block away from the local high school. I toss the Frisbee fer ol' Spot over there in the ball diamond every day. At noon hour, the high school kids hang around an' smoke an' throw all their litter on the ground. On the weekends, they're out tearin' up the countryside an' farmers' fields with their ATV's an' dirt bikes.

I gotta buddy who's a substitute teacher fer the Catholic school board. The other day he taught history to a grade 10 class. I ain't sure what they know about ol' Mother Earth but he sed that he came away knowin' that they don't even know who was fightin' in WW2 or what they was fightin' about.

The 18-25 YO demographic has the lowest percentage of voters.

Sorry, my own candid observations don't gimme much faith in young folks.

C'mon, BCL. If McGuinty had done something earnest, he would have been raked over the coals for that.

I'd rather laugh at the government for being silly than laugh at it to avoid having to give myself little cuts on my legs.

If you are in the grip of erectile dysfunction, you can treat the disorder effectively by taking the anti-impotence drug Levitra in accordance with the doctor’s instructions but it is altogether a fallacy to assume that Levitra is capable of providing you immediate erections. Get in touch with the website http://www.levitrabliss.com and you would get to know that after taking Levitra, the medicine for treating erectile dysfunction, you need to be sexually stimulated to achieve erections necessary for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
