Your Daily Nazi: Blame Zundel For CRTC Review Of "False And Misleading News" Provision

Just a quicky: I've been following Kady as she ponders the CRTC move to allow, possibly, false news on the news. And she seems to be right. Its the Zundel case the CRTC is worried about:

Here, the prohibition is to distribute a programming service “that contains false or misleading news.” Under the project, it would not distribute a program “that contains the news that the holder knows to be false or misleading and constitutes a danger to the life, health or safety of the public.” The wording of this proposal is similar to that of the Criminal Code provision that the Supreme Court of Canada has invalidated for constitutional reasons in Zundel. It is difficult to see why the ban could be considered valid.

Well, maybe, I would prefer that the CRTC wait for someone to challenge the provision in court rather than, proactively, cave and so (it seems to me) pave the way for Holocaust Denial on TV.

Curious.

So would this, then, prohibit general discussion suggesting that the Bible or the Quran is the literal "truth"?

Which wouldn't break my heart in either case.. but might cause some unrest with others who would like to use the media to spread their own version of "rightness".

I guess they are spinning it as necessary to defend free speech. I don't think there is anything wrong with our free speech right now. But the truth might very well be to allow media the ability to spread false news and tabloid like reporting without worrying about any repercussion. something like Fox News.
